Abstract
Basic, water-soluble antibiotic substances such as streptomycin and streptothricin, produced by the metabolism of species of Actinomyces are extracted from the culture broth by adsorption on charcoal and elution with a dilute solution of a aliphatic carboxylic acid having from one to five carbon atoms in the molecule in aqueous alcohol. Excess acid may be removed by evaporation under reduced pressure and the salt of the antibiotic substance is precipitated by the addition of alcohol followed by acetone. Specified carboxylic acids are formic acetic and propionic. In examples: I streptothricin adsorbed on charcoal is extracted with formic acid in methanol; II streptomycin is similarly extracted; III streptomycin is extracted with acetic acid in methanol and IV streptomycin is extracted with propionic acid in methanol.
