Abstract

755,297. Hatch covers. MERCIER, J. G. July 27, 1954, No. 21930/54. Addition to 698,798. Class 113. In a sealing arrangement for hatch covers having one or more panels 14, 15 and comprising a strip or strips of resilient material 24 disposed to form a continuous liquid seal between the panel or panels and the coaming 5 or adjacent panels, means are provided to collect and discharge liquid which may leak through the seal. The coaming 5 has an angle member 7 with a plate 8 defining a channel 9 in which leakage liquid collects and is discharged through a pipe 10. The sealing strip 24 is retained in flanges 11 and 12 forming a continuous channel 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 (Fig. 6). The flange 11 abuts the plate 8 to prevent the sealing strip being compressed beyond a predetermined amount and also protects the sealing strip against lateral pressure. A gutter member 25 mounted on the inclined end 17 of panel 15 collects any liquid which leaks through the seal between the panels and discharges it at either or both ends into the channel 9. In another embodiment the cover comprises a single panel hinged to the coaming, the sealing strip and its channels forming a rectangle in one horizontal plane. In another embodiment comprising panels which may be pivotally connected together, the end faces 16, 17 of adjacent panels and the portions 18 and 22 of the continuous sealing member channel are vertical. A metal plate is carried by one of the adjacent panels so as to extend over the gap therebetween to protect the strips forming a liquid seal between said adjacent panels.
