Abstract
754,021. Rolling. LOEWY, E. May 24, 1954 [May 27, 1953], No. 15174/54. Class 83 (4). A rolling mill housing comprises two I-shaped frames 1, 2 with openings 3, 4 at opposite sides, each accommodating one set of rolls. In a four high mill, pairs of working rolls 5, 6 and back-up rolls 7, 8 are mounted between upper and lower projecting legs 10, 13 of the frames. The lower chocks 9 rest on the lower legs 10 and the upper movable chocks 11 are engaged by screw - down spindles 12 passing through the upper projecting legs 13. The chocks 9, 10 are held in the frames by plates 30, 31 attached to the legs 10, 13. The working rolls 5. 6 are supported in bearings 39, 39a, the housings of which are engaged by adjustable stop screws 45 on pivoted fingers 43, 44 attached to the chocks 9, 11 and which can be moved to give unobstructed access. Each work roll is driven from one end by a motor 33, Fig. 2, through a spline coupling sleeve 37 held in position by a spring 38 for ready release by sliding back against the spring pressure. The end of each work roll opposite a motor 33 is coupled through a similar retractable sleeve 40 to a stub shaft 41 mounted on one of the roll chocks 9, 11. The screw-downs 12 of each roll chock are adjustable simultaneously from a common screw-down motor 27 through a gear box 13, but clutches 18 are provided in the drive for each screw-down.
