Abstract

753,838. Ammunition projectiles. SOC. NOUVELLE DES ETABLISSEMENTS BRANDT. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 21. 1953], No. 36555/54. Class 9(1) A rocket 1 is provided with a collapsible fin structure comprising a support S and three fins A pivoted on pins 13 mounted longitudinally of the support, the fins being so shaped that in the collapsed position the outer form of the structure is a right-circular cylinder. At the forward end, the support is screw-threaded for attachment to the rocket body. An axial passageway 4 through the support acts as a jet nozzle for the propellant gases and is fitted at the rear with a ring 6, Fig. 5, provided with internal fins 7 inclined to the axis of the projectile to deflect the gases and hence rotate the projectile. The support has a stepped portion 8 merging into a cylindrical portion 9 from which the support flares rearwardly to a flange 11 containing the ring 6 and provided with bosses 12 to receive the pivot pins 13 which extend through lugs 14 from blind holes 15 in the part 8. The fins which are of metal or light alloy such as "Duralumin" (Registered Trade Mark), consist of two parts 16, 17 with an intervening rib 18, the outer curvature of the part 16 being equal to the inner curvature of the part 17, so that in the closed position the part 17 of each fin fits over the part 16 of an adjacent fin, the diameter of the structure then being that of the body of the projectile. A strap 33 holding the fins in the collapsed position is stripped off as the projectile is launched, the fins being held during launching by the launching tube. As the projectile leaves the tube, springs 29 force the fins outwards. The fins then set back on their pivots until a notch 22 in each fin engages a projection 23 from each boss 12 to lock the fins in the extended position. Each part 16 tof the fins has reinforcing ribs 21 and each part 17 has two apertures 28 to receive the pivot eyes 19, 20 when the fins are folded.
