Abstract

Plastic foils having a cellulose base are prevented from sticking by adding to the plasticizer an oxide aerogel of a particle size of 0.05 microns or less, formed by thermal decomposition of a volatile metal or metalloid compound in the vapour state in the presence of a hydrolysing agent. The amount of oxide aerogel incorporated into the foil is preferably 0.1-0.5 per cent by weight and the preferred aerogel is silica aerogel. The aerogel may be produced as described in Specification 726,250, [Group III]. In an example, a film formed by extruding viscose solution is stretched, washed and passed through a plasticizer bath of 540 litres of water, 60 litres of glycerine and 1 litre of a 15 per cent aqueous dispersion of a silica aerogel produced from silicon tetrachloride in the vapour state which has been thermally decomposed in the presence of a hydrolysing agent. The foil is squeezed and dried and has a non-sticky surface.
