Abstract

Transparent soaps containing large proportions of perfume, disinfectant, or medicament, and which do not lose transparency or perfume &c. in use or storage are obtained by mixing at about 80 DEG C. a transparent soap, equal weights of methylated spirit and the perfume, and 1-5 per cent of a soluble form or derivative of cellulose, and cooling to about 72 DEG C. before running off to the moulds &c. Medicaments &c. specified are capsicum, menthol, camphor, iodine, terpeneless oils, aromatic alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, esters, essential oils, synthetic perfumes, and coal-tar derivatives. Viscose, and acetate, butyrate, or aceto-butyrate of cellulose are given as examples of the cellulose bodies; these form a protecting film over the soap when the tablet is dried by exposure. In an example, a transparent soap is made by saponifying with caustic soda a mixture of 55 lb. of tallow, 25 lb. of coconut oil, 10 lb. of pale resin, adding 25 per cent of methylated spirit, heating to 80 DEG C. and then slowly to 97 DEG C., boiling, mixing in 10 lb. of pure glycerine, and cooling over 2 hours to about 80 DEG C. 33 per cent of perfume, disinfectant, or medicament, 33 per cent of methylated spirit, and 1-5 per cent of cellulose acetate are then mixed in as described.
