Abstract

Films of regenerated cellulose or of simple or complex cellulose esters or ethers such as cellulose nitrate, cellulose formate, acetate, butyrate or other fatty acid ester, methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose, or cellulose acetate nitrate have incorporated therewith inorganic, organic, or organo-metallic &c. chemical products such as insecticides, odorous substances, antiseptics, radioactive substances, or substances capable of absorbing certain light rays. The films may be employed as they are or may be applied to supporting materials such as paper, cardboard, natural or artificial fabrics, rubber, &c. The product incorporated may be in the form of a solid, liquid, or polymerized gas, and may be added in predetermined quantity per unit area of surface. Insecticides mentioned are nicotine, camphor, Pyrethrum powder, and naphthalene. Films containing such insecticides may be used for protecting articles of furniture, carpets, &c., or for making bags for clothes and furs for protection against moths. A varnish of collodion containing an insecticide may be spread on sheets of paper or on artificial or natural fabric which may then be made into bags for clothes. As odorous substances, natural or synthetic essences of flowers or other such substances having a low vapour tension may be used. The films containing odorous substances may be coloured, if desired, and may replace perfumed sachets or be made into artificial flowers. Antiseptics specified are chlorosalol, dextroform, thioxy-methylene, menthol, iodine, iodoform, and oil of Cade. The films containing antiseptics may be made adhesive by the addition of a suitable material such as a gum or resin either in the body of the film or on the surface. Films adapted to produce iodine or nascent oxygen or contact with water may be made, for example, to a collodin of cellulose acetate in acetone, plasticed or not, may be added sodium iodide, an oxidizing agent such as zinc peroxide, and an organic acid such as citric acid, all in the anhydrous state and in suitable proportions, and films adapted to produce nascent iodine on moistening made therefrom. For packing goods sensitive to ultra-violet light, or for constituting, in conjunction with sheets of glass, safety glasses of the type known under the Registered Trade Mark "Triplex", or for fitting in spectacles to protect the eyes, for example, against ultra-violet light, films containing light absorbent substances such as certain ethylene complexes or certain guanidines may be employed. Examples are given.ALSO:Films of regenerated cellulose or of cellulose esters or ethers have incorporated therewith substances which on contact with water are adapted to produce nascent iodine or nascent oxygen. For example, sodium iodide, an oxidizing agent such as zinc peroxide, and an organic acid such as citric acid in suitable proportions may be incorporated in a collodion of cellulose acetate in acetone. The film made from this solution on contact with water or aqueous alcohol produces mascent iodine. Radioactive substances may also be incorporated in films of the materials specified above.ALSO:Films of regenerated cellulose or of simple or complex cellulose esters or ethers have incorporated therewith insecticides such as nicotine, camphor, Pyrethrum powder, and naphthalene, or antiseptics such as chlorosalol, dextroform, trioxymethylene, menthol, iodine, iodoform, or oil of cade. The films containing antiseptics may be made adhesive, if desired. Films adapted to produce nascent iodine or oxygen on contact with water may also be made by adding the necessary chemicals to the cellulose base. Films containing insecticides may be used for protecting furniture, carpets, &c., or for making bags for clothes and furs for protection against moths. A varnish of a collodion containing an insecticide may be spread on artificial or natural fabrics which may then be made into bags for clothes.
