Abstract
Fusible alcohol-modified melamine resins are prepared by reacting formaldehyde with melamine in aqueous alcoholic solution in the proportion of at least 6 mols. of formaldehyde to 1 mol. of melamine, condensation to the A-stage being effected at a pH of at least 8.5, and condensing to the B-stage by acidification of the initial condensate solution after partial dehydration of this solution. The initial pH is preferably kept at 8.8 to 9 by continuous addition of alkali or by using a buffer such as trisodium phosphate. In the examples, butanol is the alcohol used, and dehydration is effected by cyclic distillation to remove about half the water. Final condensation is at a pH of 4.5 to 5.5 and the solution is completely dehydrated. The resins are particularly suitable for use with alkyd resins in lacquers. U.S.A.
