Class 61 A hammer is provided with a cavity for extracting or holding a nail, the cavity being provided in a lug 5 on the head 7 and a slot 11 extending through the wall of the lug to the cavity. The slot 11 which may taper in width extends from the open end 12 of the cavity to near the closed end 13: When used as a nail extractor the head of the nail projects through the slot the head being caught on the walls of the cavity, when used for placing a nail in position, the nail is inserted into the cavity so that it projects through the open end.
