Slaughtering.-In a slaughtering-gun, the captive bolt which is propelled by an explosive, has a piston B working in the cylinder G, and is characterized by an annular groove F in the leading face of the piston whereby a sharp peripheral edge is formed which removes any deposit, caused by a previous explosion, from the walls of the cylinder G. The inertia of the bolt is reduced by a central bore C which extends from the penetrating end D to the piston B, an annular groove at the back of the piston, and a bore K in the portion of the bolt which extends into the cartridge chamber. The end D is plugged by an aluminium screw E, and the bore K may also be plugged. A rubber buffer H for the bolt is provided.
