Abstract
752,386. Making heat exchangers; welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. April 13, 1954 [April 13, 1953], No. 10892/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of providing a nipple on a hollow part, such as a header of a tubulous heat exchanger, adapted to resist fluid pressure includes forming a nipple tube with an inwardly inclined end part, forming a hole in the wall of the hollow part, applying the end part of the tube to the hole to define an external welding groove between the said end part of the tube and the hollow part and depositing weld metal in the groove to unite the tube and the hollow part. A nipple tube 1 is closed at one end by swaging to form a dome 2, Figs. 1 or 2, and the centre of the dome sealed by a weld 3. The wall 4 of a header is drilled with a hole 5 of diameter less than the inside diameter of the tube 1 and the wall of the header around the hole formed with a flat surface 7. The nipple tube 1 is centred on the hole 5, an annular recess 6 formed on the tube during swaging engaging the edge of the hole. The groove formed by the closed end of the tube 1 and the flat surface 7 is then filled with weld metal 8 and, after testing the weld by fluid pressure, the closed end of the tube 1, the root of the weld 8, and the' hole 5 are drilled out so that the hole 5 is widened to the same diameter as the inside of the tube 1.
