Abstract
1,211,810. Tube expanders; jointing by forging. CARRIER CORP. 19 Aug., 1968 [11 Dec., 1967], No. 39608/68. Headings B3H and B3J. [Also in Division F2] A method of sealing a defective heat exchanger tube 17 comprises inserting an expansible body 3 into the tube end to be sealed the body having a tapered opening therein 5 with a member 7, larger than the narrower end disposed in the larger end, of the opening, connecting pressure means 15 to the expansible body in communication with the larger end of the opening 5, displacing the member 7 along the opening by exerting pressure thereon to expand the body into sealing engagement with the tube and wedge the member 7 into sealing engagement with the walls of the tapered opening releasing pressure exerted on the interior wall of the opening and the member, and disconnecting the pressure means from the expansible body. The plug 1 can be formed by machining a cylindrical blank 2 to have a constant internal diameter, an external taper, and a threaded opening 13, and then forcing the plug through a die 9 to provide a tapered internal opening 5 and an exterior of substantially constant diameter, the ball 7 being introduced into the opening 5 before the blank enters the die 9. In an alternative method a body (3<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3, (not shown), with a ball (7) in the larger end of a bore (7) includes a threaded insert (11<SP>1</SP>) which retains the ball (7). In use an hydraulic line 15 is screwed into the threaded opening 13.
