Abstract

752,041. Spring suspensions; vehicle underframes. VOLKSWAGENWERK GES. July 19, 1954 [July 20, 1953], No. 20915/54. Class 108 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a wheel suspension for the driven wheels of a motor vehicle, wherein the wheels are mounted on independent half axles and are guided by means of axle guide rods, the vehicle driving unit comprising engine, clutch, differential and change-speed gears are mounted on two spaced cross members and the axle guide rods are each pivotally supported on one and flexibly supported on the other of the cross members which are secured to the vehicle main chassis frame by connecting elements such as threaded bolts. As shown, a driving unit consisting of an engine 5, clutch 4, axle drive 3 and change-speed gear 2 is supported through rubber blocks 8, 10 on cross frame members 7, 11 rigidly secured to main chassis frame members 1, 19 by bolts 18, 21. Road wheels are carried on live half axles 14 supported by swinging links 12, pivoted to the cross member 7, the links 12 being sprung against the cross member 11 by coil springs 16 and shock absorbers 17. The links 12 may be connected to the cross member 7 by means of torsion bars, in which case the coil springs 16 may be dispensed with.
