Abstract

751,676. Dropping articles from aircraft. HOOVER, M. M. July 8, 1954, No. 20023/54. Class 9(1) [Also in Group XVII] A shock - absorbing package comprises in one form (Figs. 1 and 2) an outer tube, comprising relatively-rotatable portions 11, 12, and a flexible inner tube 13 having its upper end secured to the portion 11 by a screwed ring 15, adaptea to receive an end cap 16, and its lower end attached centrally to a bottom end cap 17, an article being enclosed in the inner tube by rotating the portion 11 relative to the position 12 so as to twist the tube above and below the article. In a modification, Fig. 4, the lower end of the inner tube is attached to the periphery of the position 12 so that a conical diaphragm is formed below as well as above the article, in this an artillery shell fuse, the end caps 20 and 21 being pressed on. To facilitate dropping from aircraft, the outer tube may be provided with fins 34, Fig. 6, in a slidable domeshaped nose 35 spaced from the lower end cap 33 to form an air chamber, vents 39 being provided for the escape of air on impact. The upper end of the nose may be connected to the end cap by an elastic tube (not shown).
