Abstract

[Also in Group XVIII] A remote electrical indicating system for a steam pressure gauge comprises a television system formed of flying-spot scanners operating in conjunction with a photo-emission light cell, the system being arranged to utilize light having a wavelength in the region of 4000 Š.U. in order that a useful signal may be obtained in presence of ambient incandescent lighting. The flying-spot scanner comprises a cathode-ray tube having a phosphor of the nickel-killed zinc sulphide type and the light cell is of a type having either a photo-cathode expansion in the region of 4000 Š.U. or a photo-cathode of the silver-oxygen-caesium type operated in conjunction with a filter attenuating light of a wavelength greater than 5000 Š.U. The gauge (see Group XVIII) is constructed with a mirror and light-absorbing box located at the rear and arranged to provide a clear indication of level by absorbing light traversing the portion of the gauge column occupied by water and reflecting light traversing the portion occupied by steam. The front carries a matt aluminium scale or is painted with matt-finish aluminium paint which is stated to absorb a substantial proportion of light of wavelength greater than 4000 A.U.
