Abstract

750,930. Electrically heated fabric. FLINT, Ltd., H., and CLARK, E. W. Nov. 19, 1954 [Nov. 19, 1953], No. 32160/53. Class 39(3). An elastic heating pad, e.g., for clothing comprises courses of resistance wire 11 interknitted with separate courses of non-metallic threads 10 so that the wire courses are separate from one another by one or more courses of non- metallic threads and this knitted fabric is embedded between two sheets 12 of rubber or other elastic plastic remaining flexible over a wide'temperature range, e.g., silicone rubber. The nickel-chromium resistance wires and the nylon threads are knitted together in a circular knitting machine having two or more knitting heads. The resulting tubular fabric is slit to form a sheet which is placed-between two sheets of rubber or like plastic, and the composite sheet is subjected to pressure at a temperature sufficient to weld the sheets together. The plastic sheets if initially uncured are cured after assembly i.e., during or after pressure. Before welding, the end parts of the wires are unlooped and after welding these are drawn through the rubber and the wires are connected singly or in groups to metal eyelets or rivets secured through the rubber sheets. Thus all five resistance wires in Fig. 1 are secured at one end to eyelet 21 and at the other end some wires are connected to eyelet 15 and some to eyelet 18, whereby through'a switch with contacts 24, 25 and a pivoted arm 27, some or all the wires are connected into circuit. The strips may be perforated at 31 between the wires for ventilation.
