Abstract

840,243. Electrically heated fabrics. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 6, 1958 [June 13 1957], No. 3874/58. Class 39(3). [Also in Group VIII] An electrical heater element is composed of a warp knitted fabric consisting of a series of warp chains 7, 8, 9 ... knitted from yarns of natural or synthetic material of relatively high tensile strength, joined together by laid in weft yarns 26, 27, 28 ... of similar or other material such as glass fibre, the weft yarns extending parallel to each other in the fabric and a number of them secured in each warp stitch. Wires 1, 2, 3 ... extend longitudinally of the fabric and are incorporated in the warp chains as unknitted warp wires, the wires periodically extending from one wale to the next or over a series of wales so as to assume a generally sinuous form thereby ensuring that the fabric is reasonably flexible. The wires are connected in groups or otherwise to electrical conductors and serve as resistances. The wires may be solid or stranded and, when the latter, may be of right and left handed twist, positioned alternately in the fabric. After the circuit connections are made the element is sandwiched between insulating layers of electrically non-conductive material such as rubber. The assembly is then vulcanized under heat and pressure to form an integral structure.
