Abstract

The invention comprises 2-bromo-17a -methyl - androstan - 17b - ol - 3 - one and 17a -methyl - D 1 - androsten - 17b - ol - 3 - one, together with a process for their preparation from 17a - methyl - androstan - 17b - ol - 3 - one by treatment with approximately one molar equivalent of bromine to form the 2-bromo derivative, and thereafter dehydrobrominating (preferably using a tertiary organic amine) to yield the D 1-androsten. In examples (1) 17a -methyl - androstan - 17b - ol - 3 - one in glacial acetic acid containing a trace of hydrogen bromide is treated with one mol. of bromine in acetic acid, the product poured into water and the precipitate purified from methanol, yielding 2 - bromo - 17a - methyl - androstan - 17b - ol-3 - one. (2) The product of (1) is refluxed in collidine, poured into cooled, dilute sulphuric acid and the precipitate extracted with ether yielding 17a - methyl - D 1 - androsten - 17b - ol-3-one after purification by chromatography.
