Abstract

750,291. Induction motors. BERESFORD & SON, Ltd., J. July 7, 1952 [July 5, 1951], No. 15939/51. Class 35. The bimetallic starting switch which cuts out the starting winding of a split-phase motor for normal running is operated or held open by current from an additional winding on the stator and energized by transformer action from the other two windings. In the form shown the motor stator carries a main winding 10 and a starting winding 11 connected to terminals 10a, 11a. The starting switch comprises a snapaction bimetallic strip 13 which when cold carries the current from the line L to the starting winding. This current heats the strip 13 so that it snaps over to the position (shown in broken lines) bridging terminals 12a, 12b of the additional winding 12 which generates current for maintaining the strip in a heated condition, a resistor 14 limiting the current. In a modification the additional winding comprises several coils in series and the strip is indirectly heated. A lap-wound capacitor-start machine is also described.
