750,236. Automatic speed control systems. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 2, 1954 [April 23, 1953], No. 11256/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electrically driven hoist having a manually controlled speed adjusting rheostat, an automatic control system is arranged to correct any error between the actual speed and the desired speed set by manual adjustment. Several embodiments with suggested modifications are described as applied to a Ward- Leonard drive : (i) the control lever H operates a speed-control rheostat R (in series with the Ward-Leonard generator field F) and a reference potentiometer P, the error signal comprises the difference between the reference voltage and the voltage of a tacho-generator TG driven by the motor. The error signal may : (a) energize relays RL1 ... RL3 according to its magnitude to short out sections of the control rheostat, Fig. 1 (not shown); (b) control a Tirrell type field regulator, Fig. 4 (not shown); (c) energize a torque motor TM connected to a differential Selsyn DS in a Selsyn link ST, RS, between the control lever and the rheostat; (d) energize a torque motor TM to move the drum of the control rheostat relative to the contact arm (operated by the control lever), Fig. 9 (not shown); (e) differentially energize the fields of an exciter MG, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) ; (f) control a magnetic amplifier to energize an auxiliary field or to boost the generator field supply, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown). (ii) Contacts are operated in accordance with the difference in movement of a cam CM connected to the control lever and a centrifugal governor G driven by the motor: (a) the governor and the cam may act on opposite ends of a lever to operate sequentially-closing contacts, Fig. 2 (not shown); (b) the cam may move contacts which sequentially engage with a governor operated contact, Fig. 3 (not shown); (c) the governor operated contact may be oscillated by a continuously driven cam RCM to provide a " variable on/off period " type of control, Fig. 6 (not shown); (d) the governor may act on the knee joint of a togglelinkage to vary the effective length of a pushrod, Fig. 7 (not shown).
