Abstract
749,685. Ventilating ships. WOODS OF COLCHESTER, Ltd., and DALY, B. B. Dec. 22, 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 33118/52. Class 137. [Also in Group. XXVI] A complete section of a ship's ventilation ducting containing an axial flow fan and its driving motor is hinged to the remainder of the ducting on an axis parallel to that of the section but outside the section, while the remainder of the ducting incorporates a connecting structure which renders the ducting rigid without preventing the hinged section from being swung aside. The driving motor 22 is carried within a section 21 of ventilation ducting by means of spider arms 24. To ensure clearance around the impeller 23, the arms 24 have a screw adjustment and external flanges 25, 26 may be welded to the section 21 to preserve the circular section. Hinge lugs 27, 28 welded to the section 21 are secured to a hinge bar 29 carrying nuts 31 having spigots which engage in lugs 17, 18 to act as hinge pins. The nuts are secured in adjusted position by lock nuts 32. The lugs 17, 18 are carried by a bar 12 which, together with a similar bar 13, connects a pair of flanged end rings 11. The remainder of the ducting is bolted to the end rings 11. A semicylindrical wall 16 extends between the bars 12 and 13 and is desirably welded to them and to the end rings 11. Flexible leads 42 run from a terminal box 19 and through a pipe 43 to the motor 22. Alternatively, the leads may pass through the hinge bar 29, which is then hollow. When the section 21 is swung out into the position shown in Fig. 3, it is held by a cable 44. A handle 33 is provided. When the section 21 is in the closed position shown in Fig. 1, it is fastened in place by bolts 34, Figs. 1 and 5, passing through the bar 13 and lugs 35. A similar arrangement may be provided on the hinge side. Rubber members 36 make airtight joints between longitudinal members 37, 38 and the bars 12, 13 respectively. A rubber gasket 39 laps over the flange 14 of each end ring 11 and the adjacent end of the section 21 and is held in place by metal straps 41 bolted to the ends of the members 37, 38. To avoid gaps at the ends of the members 37, 38, either the ends of the members 36 may be extended inwards to reach the wall of the section 21 or the gaskets 39 may be carried through slots in the members 37, 38 and extended radially outwards as far as the members 37. Alternatively, the member 36 may be replaced by a gasket similar to the gasket 39, backed by a single and preferably wide strap secured to the remaining part of each flange 14 adjacent the wall 16. An inspection window 45 and lubrication pipes 46 ending in nipples 47 may be provided.
