Abstract

883,572. Axial-flow fans. ENGINEERING ARTS Ltd. Aug. 16, 1960, No. 28294/60. Class 110 (1). An axial-flow fan for circulating air at high temperatures within processing equipment (not shown) is inserted through an aperture in the outer structure of the equipment and located therein by a main mounting flange 9 with the driving motor 23 located outside the equipment. Bearing housings 15a, 16a are secured to opposite ends of a tube 11 which is bolted to a flange 10 at the bottom of an outer tube 8 and bolted at a flange 12 to the flange 9. Flange 9 is carried by the outer tube 8 and in turn carries a ventilated bearing housing 24 which supports the motor 23. The bearings and the driving shaft are cooled by air drawn into the tube 8 through ports 21 by means of an auxiliary fan impeller 2a and expelled through ports 22 into the annular space between tubes 8 and 11, finally being discharged between the flanges 9 and 12. Grease is supplied to the bearings from a nipple 26 through piping 27, excess grease being expelled through a pipe 28. The flow of air through the main impeller 1 is controlled by damper vanes 29 mounted on radial pivots 30 and connected by links 31 to a rotatable actuating ring 32. A lug 34 on ring 32 is connected by a link (not shown) to an external control means. After removal of impeller 1, the entire bearing assembly can be withdrawn as a unit through the housing 24.
