748,763. Magnetic dust. BURROUGHS CORPORATION, [formerly BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE CO.]. July 3, 1952 [July 17, 1951; July 17, 1951], No. 16752/52. Class 38 (2). [Also in Groups XV and XVI] A magnetic ink composition for making records on non-magnetic materials, e.g. paper, or for impregnating ribbons used for typing such records comprises 50-70 per cent ferromagnetic material having a particle diameter not over 5 microns dispersed in 50-30 per cent of a viscous fluid consisting of organic esters, glycols or a mixture of oleic and lauric acids. Ferromagnetic materials specified are hydrogenreduced iron, electrolytic iron, Swedish sponge iron or iron made by decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl and having a particle density of 7.8 gs. per c.c. and an average particle diameter of 3 microns. Preferably the iron is reclassified to remove all particles of a diameter greater than 1.5 microns. A specific ink comprises 26 parts oleic acid, 5 parts lauric acid and 69 parts reclassified carbonyl iron, the proportions being by volume. After blending the mixture is subjected to ultrasonic vibrations at a frequency of 450 kilocycles per second.
