Abstract
665,461. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. BRUSH DEVELOPMENT CO. July 8, 1948. [July 21, 1947] No. 18398/48. Class 40 (ii). [Also in Groups VIII and XXXV] In a magnetic transducing apparatus, A.C. bias is employed, having a frequency of at least twice the highest frequency to be recorded and a record track material is used of interfelted fibre or paper less than about 3 mils thick containing a permanently magnetizable iron oxide powder having a particle size of 1 micron or less, the distribution of the particles in the surface adjacent to the pole pieces of the transducer being about 6 per cent to about 25 per cent by volume. The powdered magnetic iron oxide may be mixed with a slurry of papermaking fibres, preferably Kraft, containing bonding agents, such as polymerized resins, ethylenes, vinyl compounds, cellulose, casein, rubber latex, gum, starch, &c., and smoothed as by calendering by pressing between polished and heated rollers in such a manner that an element of slippage between the rollers is produced which is effective for densifying and levelling the surface of the paper. Details are given of various processes of manufacture of the paper. The tape which is slightly wider than the guide structure 2-26, Fig. 7 of the transducer is guided over the pole pieces 2-21 by guide walls 2-31, and may be provided with coloured coatings or labels to indicate parts of the record, or the coating may include a layer of electrically conducting substance for controlling a starting or stopping operation.
