In a lamp for use in conjunction with a reflector in the headlight of a motor vehicle, and comprising an auxiliary or dipping filament 10 associated with a dished screen 9, the part of the screen which is directed towards the cap is provided with-a flat edge portion, which may be continuous or interrupted to form two parts 13, 14, and extends,.in the plane of the upper edge of the screen cavity 11, from the latter edge towards the cap through a distance equal to at least one-fifth of the length of said cavity. The extension parts 13, 14 serve to prevent rays from that part of the filament above the edge of the cavity 11 nearest the lamp cap from escaping downwardly towards the lower half of the reflector and producing upward glare. A main filament. may be provided and, in the example, a main filament 8 is located in the space between the extension parts 13, 14, and supported between wires 5 and 7 in the plane of the filament, the wire 5 serving also to support the screen 9. A third wire 6 located slightly above the plane of the wires 5, 7 is connected to one end of the auxiliary filament 10 the other end of which is connected to the screen.
