748,726. Screwing-up caps and bungs. CALIFORNIA RESEARCH CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 28339/53. Class 83 (3). [Also in Groups XVII and XXIII] A device for inserting a screw cap or bung 100 into an opening 113 and for screwing it up in correct alignment comprises means 27 for holding the bung 100, drivable means 93, and means 10 connecting it with the holder such that the holding means cannot rotate relatively to the drivable means but can move laterally and/or tilt. The bung 100 is held against a rubber ring 53 on the holder 27 by suction produced in a central bore in the device. As the device is lowered, a lip 29 engages the rim 112 of the bung-opening in a drum 110; further motion presses the bung 100 towards the opening against the pressure of a spring 42; and the bung is then tightened as it is rotated through the shaft 10 and hexagonal connections 14, 75. The hexagonal connections each consist of a hexagonal socket and a hexagonal engaging-member having spherical sides to allow " floating ". The bung-holder may therefore move laterally or angularly to allow for misalignment between the tool and drum opening. The bungholder is formed with two recesses to engage lugs 104 on the bung to rotate it positively. A modified holder for a cap 120, Fig. 12, has a diametrical recess to engage the bar 124 and the sealing ring 53 is arranged to contact the inside of the bore 123 in the cap. In the latter case, the lower rim of the tool engages the drum itself and not the rim of the opening.
