In Scotch or like feed apparatus for carding engines a feed element is guided across a receiving surface by a member attached to an endless chain, belt or the like which is trained over sprockets, pulleys or the like so that it follows a path having substantially horizontal upper and lower courses with inclined end portions. This provides at the ends of each stroke, a slower traverse and hence a slight increase in the weight of material delivered per unit length of traverse. As shown, the lower ends of feed lattices 18, 19 of a Scotch feed apparatus are reciprocated along rollers 11, delivering on to a lattice conveyer 10, by means of a cross-head 27 on an endless chain 26 engaging a slot 28 in a carriage 16 slidable along rails 14, 15. The end portions of chain 26 are inclined to the horizontal as they pass between pairs of idler sprockets 33, 34 and the end sprockets 21 and 22, thus providing a reduced speed of horizontal traverse over these portions. Each end sprocket is mounted in a slidable block 24 and is connected to the corresponding idler sprockets by a pair of scissor links 35, 36; adjustment of the spacing of a pair of idler sprockets by means of a double-threaded lead screw 29 will thus vary the position of the end sprocket, enabling the length of traverse to be regulated. Sprocket 22 is connected to a sprocket 39 which is driven by a chain 38 from a sprocket 37.
