[Also in Group XXVI] A steam engine is braked thermodynamically by setting the control of the cylinder to back pressure and closing the control valve 4, the pressure in the live steam pipe 5 shut off by the control valve being adapted to the braking effort by an inserted regulator which governs the entry of steam from pipe 9A branched off the exhaust pipe 9 to pipe 10 leading to the shut-off inlet pipe 5. The regulator, as shown in greater detail in Fig. 2, comprises a reducing valve 11, the effect of which is varied by steam pressure acting below a piston in cylinder 17 according to the regulation of a valve 19 by control handle 12.
