Abstract

747,994. Nuts, shelling. CASHEW PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Sept. 9, 1954, No. 26162/54. Class 28(2). A cashew &c. nut N, Fig. 5, has its shell cut by a pair of side by side penetrating blades 18 and 28, the blade 18 penetrating more deeply than the blade 28, the blade 28 then being swung aside to split the shell half S2 away from the other half S1 leaving the kernel K in the half S1, from which it can fall out or be easily removed by the fingers. When the handle 12 is swung to the left about its pivot pin 7 its cam 8 depresses a lug 10 projecting from a plate-like lever 5 whereby the lever 5 pivots down about a pin 4 whereby the blade 18 thereon and its associated blade penetrates the shell of the nut. The handle is then swung sideways whereby its pin 23 swings arm 22 about a pin 21 which swings an arm 24 outwards carrying the attached blade 28 outwards to split away the shell part S2. On restoring the handle 12 a spring 25 restores the blade 28 flat against the blade 18. The holder 32 is raised or lowered to suit previously graded nuts. The blades 28 and 18 are arcuate to suit the shape of the nuts, the blade 18 having a serrated edge.
