Abstract
747,971. Parachutes. IRVING AIR CHUTE OF GREAT BRITAIN, Ltd. June 1, 1954 [July 10, 1953], No. 19239/53. Class 4. In order to reduce the initial shock of opening a parachute is restrained from opening fully by the provision of a frangible reefing tie which surrounds the rigging lines at a point intermediate the load and the parachute. A reefing tie 2, as claimed in Specification 748,009, is passed through a loop on one rigging line and a fabric housing 5 on an opposite line 1. The housing 5 encloses a tube 4 of insulating material which supports spring plates 9 carrying a fine resistance wire 7 connected by leads 10, 11 to a battery within the parachute pack. The wire is energized when. the parachute is launched by a switch which is controlled manually by the parachutist or automatically by a barometrically, velocity or time-controlled device whereby the wire becomes heated and melts or burns through the tie 2, thereby freeing the rigging lines to permit the parachute to open fully. There may be more than one tie.
