[Class 4] The shock effect, due to the initial retardation, on a load 10 dropped by parachute apparatus from an aircraft travelling at high speed or altitude is kept within safe limits by forming the apparatus with one or more smaller secondary parachutes 16, 17 and 18 connected by branch lines 15 to the load line 12 directly connecting the load 10 to a main parachute 11, so that the secondary parachutes open in succession before the main parachute so as to make the retardation more gradual.
