747,533. Powder metallurgy. HOLDING INTERCITO SOC. ANON. April 21, 1954 [April 21, 1953], No. 11521/54. Class 83 (4). In a continuous process for making rods from metal powder, the powder is fed at a controlled rate into the upper end of a continuously vibrated tube of heatresisting dielectric material wherein it is presintered by a high-frequency heating device. Metal powder is fed into a tube 1 which is longitudinally vibrated by vibrators 4 to compact the powder which is pre-sintered by a high-frequency heater 5, then passes into another heater 7 for a final sintering at 1300-1400‹ C. and finally is reduced by rolls 8 which also serve to move the rod and powder continuously through the apparatus. As shown in Fig. 2, powder is fed into the tube from a hopper 9 by a worm conveyer 10, the feeding unit being bolted to a base 13. The tube is resiliently supported by an annular diaphragm 14 secured at its inner edge to the top of the tube and at its outer edge to the base 13. Protective gas may be supplied to the feeding unit at 19 and, if desired, a protective gas casing may be provided around the pre-sintered rod 6 below the furnace 5. The walls of the tube 1 may be prevented from getting overheated by using a water-cooled coil as the high-frequency heater and by means of air jets. The tube may be subjected to a jolting action in addition to the continuous vibration.
