Abstract

PURPOSE: To bond a sintered product to high density and enhance the mechanical strength of the product by supplying an electric current to starting material powder in a mold or dies under an atmosphere of reduced pressure to generate glow discharge among the powder particles after which the powder is sintered by heating and pressurizig.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon powder 7 as starting material for sintering is filled between punches 4, 5 in mold 1. The interior of mold 1 is evacuated to about 1W50 Torr, and an electric current is supplied to powder 7 from power source 6 through upper and lower punches 4, 5 to generate glow discharge uniformly spread over the whole of powder 7. By this discharge gases and impurities attached to the surface of powder 7 are decomposition-evaporated to purify and activate the surface. Punches 4, 5 are then driven to pressurize powder 7, and the powder supply is increased to heat powder 7. Thus, powder 7 is sintered. By this method powder 7 is sintered in a short time, and the sintered body has high density and strength.
