Abstract
747,492. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 17, 1953 [March 20, 1952], No. 7338/53. Class 39 (1). In a cathode ray tuning indicator the surface of the funnel-shaped luminescent screen 3, Fig. 5, is symmetrical with respect to not more than two axial planes and the steepness of axial sections of the surface varies progres. sively with the angle between the plane of the section and a datum plane, the arrangement being such that wher the two deflecting rods 4 are at cathode potential equipotential lines of elliptical form are produced. The screen is a funnel with a circular smaller end and an elliptical or circular larger end. If the larger end is elliptical the major axis of the ellipse cuts the deflection rods 4; if it is circular the sides of the funnel are straight in the plane cutting the rods 4 and convex in a perpendicular plane, Fig. 6 (not shown), or concave and straight in the respective planes, Fig. 7 (not shown), the transition between the straight and curved portions being a smooth one. The cathode hood which screens light from the cathode is formed with a dome 6 and a cylindrical part 5 having two diametrically opposite recesses 8 near the deflection rods; the recesses assist in making the equipotential lines more nearly elliptical. The structure is supported by stay wires 7. The effect of the elliptical equipotential lines is to increase the shadow angle when the two deflecting rods are at approximately cathode potential, Fig. 3 (not shown); if they are at screen potential the equipotential lines are no longer elliptical, Fig. 4 (not shown). An amplifying system may be housed in the same envelope.
