Abstract

The oil of an oil-sealed rotary vacuum pump is freed from contaminants by discharging the exhaust oil from the pump into a reservoir, aerating the oil therein with dry air to vaporize and remove contaminants, and recirculating the purified oil to the pump. In Fig. 1, sealing oil from a water-cooled rotary pump 4 flows through discharge pipe 17 into the bottom of reservoir <PICT:0747344/III/1> 5, which is surrounded by heating element 6. Oil discharged from pipe 17 is deflected by electrically heated baffle 23 on to tray 19, overflows from the tray, and flows through the annular passage 21 formed between the tray and the wall of the reservoir on to tray 20, and thence through a central aperture 22 to the bottom of the reservoir. Volatile vapours from the oil are removed by pipe 8. Dried compressed air, which may be preheated, from container 5 is bubbled through the oil via pipe 26 and perforated pipes 27. Purified oil is returned to the pump through pipe 18 and magnetic valve 11.
