Class 110(2) A rotary engine, pump, blower or the like has a stationary central drum 10 of approximately elliptical cross-section mounted eccentrically on fixed shafts 8, 9 on which is also mounted a rotatable casing 14 which carries an even number of radially sliding vanes 24, 25, 26, 27 and rotates about the drum 10 forming chambers 36, 37, 38, 39, the whole assembly being enclosed in a housing 1. Diametrically opposite pairs of vanes, e.g. 24, 26, Fig. 3, are rigidly joined together, so balancing the centrifugal force on each, and the inner edge of each vane has a recess which contains an insert 28, 29. 30 or 31. Modifications of these inserts are described (see Figs. 8 to 14, not shown). The vanes may be divided axially and diametrically opposite parts secured to rings (see Fig. 7, not shown). A groove 34 in the casing 14 allows the air spaces in the casing outside the vanes to communicate with one another for the purpose of equalization of pressure. A frustoconical piston ring may be used to seal one face of the drum 10 (see Fig. 6, not shown). The gas enters through a bore 11 in the shaft 8 and passes to an inlet port 111 in one side of the drum 10, is dicharged through a port 13 in the opposite side of the drum and out through a bore 12 in the shaft 9. The casing 14 is driven by a pulley or other means on the extension 18. Lubricant passages are arranged so that lubricant is separated from the gas by a centrifugal action.
