Abstract

A rotating engine has a housing 1 rotating about a fixed centre x. The engine may be a Wankel engine and have a mainshaft 2 and a rotor 3 rotating about a fixed centre y. The mainshaft may be stationary and a segment 5 positioned between phasing gears 4 may cause the phasing gears to act as a pump for lubricating the rotor and its seals. Passages 7 allow the ingress and egress of fluids.

Description

ROTATING ENGINE.
This invention relates to a rotating engine.
Engines are well known devices which comprise of two main types, Piston engines and rotary engines, the most well known being the 'Wankel' rotary, a brief description of which follows -
The rotary engine is a special type of reciprocating engine in which the rotor forms the combustion chamber as it follows a trochiodal path. The cross section of the rotor is a triangle with convex sides, it moves in a housing whose chamber is an oval curve whose cross section is slightly reduced in the centre {Epitrochoid}, the three corners of the rotor follow the wall of the housing as the rotor rotates, thus generating three cells 120 degrees apart and sealed from one another. These cells periodically become smaller and then larger as the rotor rotates. During each rotation of the rotor an ignition combustion process occurs in each of the cells, ie, after one full rotation of the triangular rotor, the engine has completed the process three times.
According to the present invention there is provided a rotating housing and a rotating rotor, No crankshaft and No additional flywheel. ( the rotating housing forms the flywheel and the Fixed Mainshaft replaces the crankshaft).
A specimen embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawings, in which:- A device, consisting of a housing 1, which rotates in balance about a fixed centre ( x). The mainshaft 2 containing within it, a rotor 3, also in balance and also rotating about its own fixed centre ( y), in a prearranged ratio ( controlled by phasing gears 4). The consequential engine will consist of these two rotating components per unit. Any number of units may be connected together to give more power. The unit may be of either a type known as a Two stroke cycle or as a four stroke cycle and may be, with suitable modifications, made to 'run'on any known fuel. As the Mainshaft 2 is stationary, a segment 5 positioned between the phasing gears 4, fixed to the rotor journal, causes the phasing gears to act as a Pump, thereby lubricating and cooling the rotor and its seals, passages 7 in the fixed mainshaft allow ingress and egress of fluids and the consequent pressure may be used to lubricate and cool other parts. 6 shows fluid coolant passages in housing 1.
