747,188. Telegraph transmitters. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. April 8, 1954 [April 28, 1953], No. 11742/53. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A transmitter intended for use with a teleprinter comprises a rotatable conducting disc 18, 19 having a number of radially disposed groups of depressions in which contact balls 26 are selectively placed to be engaged by contact fingers 33 whose cranked ends extend through holes in a transparent insulating cover 27, the cover serving to retain the balls in their depressions and also as a carrier for the fingers. A detachable window 37 on the cover 27 permits changing the ball positions to alter the code. The disc 18, 19 is driven step-by-step by an electromagnet 5 and a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 13, 20. Generally, the magnet 5 is controlled by the teleprinter to advance the disc one step at the end of each character; but, alternatively, the magnet 5 may interrupt contacts in its own circuit and these contacts may operate in conjunction with changeover contacts operated by a cam rotatable with the disc (Fig. 2, not shown) whereby the disc is automatically driven to a home position.
