Abstract

The invention comprises tropic acid N-alkyl-N-(g -picoly)-amides o of formula <FORM:0746926/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms, and acid addition salts thereof. The compounds are prepared by condensing an alkyl - (g - picolyl) - amine, wherein the alkyl group contains 3 or 4 carbon atoms, with a tropic acid halide (preferably the chloride) or its acetyl derivative preferably in the presence of an organic tertiary base (e.g. pyridine) and, where the product contains an acetyl group, removing this group by hydrolysis. Salts are prepared by reacting the products with acids, for example hydrochloric and hydrobromic acids. The examples describe the preparation of N-(n-propyl)-, N-isopropyl-, and N-(n-butyl)-N-(g -picolyl)-amides of tropic acid, the latter being isolated in the form of its hydrochloride. Isopropyl-, n-propyl, and n-butyl-(g -picolyl)-amines are obtained by reacting a 4-halogenomethyl-pyridine with the appropriate alkyl amine, or by reacting N-(para-toluene-sulphonyl) - 4 - aminomethyl - pyridine with the appropriate alkyl halide or sulphate and subsequently deacylating the product.
