Abstract

N : N1 - dinitroso - N : N1 - dialkyl diamides of benzene dicarboxylic acids (see Group IV (b)) are employed as blowing agents in forming cellular objects of synthetic resin, e.g. in polyvinyl chloride-plasticizer mixtures.ALSO:The invention comprises N:N1-dinitroso-N:N1-dialkyl diamides of benzene dicarboxylic acids. The compounds are produced by a process which comprises reacting together an N:N1 dialkyl diamide of a benzene dicarboxylic acid, nitric acid and an inorganic nitrite at a temperature between -20 DEG and 45 DEG C., the ratio by weight of nitric acid to N:N1-dialkyl diamide being at least 5.7 to 1. The compounds may be used as blowing agents in forming cellular objects (see Groups IV (a) and V). In examples: N:N1-Dinitroso-N:N1-dimethyl terephthalamide is obtained by reacting N:N1-dimethyl terephthalamide with nitric acid and aqueous sodium nitrite (I); or solid sodium nitrate (IV); N:N1-dinitroso-N:N1-diethyl terephthalamide and N:N1-dinitroso-N:N1-dimethyl isophthalamide are prepared from the corresponding N:N1-dialkyl amides by processes similar to (I), (II) and (III).ALSO:N : N1-dinitroso-N : N1-dialkyl diamides of benzene dicarboxylic acids (see Group IV(b)) are employed as blowing agents in forming cellular objects of rubber.
