Abstract

745,539. Switches operated by impact. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 5, 1954 [March 5, 1953], No. 6190/53. Class 38 (5) A crash - operated switch device has a spring-biased control member normally projecting beyond the skin of an aircraft, a second member which is usually caused to project from the skin when the control member is moved into the interior of the aircraft by contact with an obstruction, and a frangible or distortable switch unit which is distorted or broken if the projection of the second member is prevented. n one form, the control member 25 is pivoted at 19 and is biased by a spring 27 to the Fig. 1 position so that a link 15, connected thereto by a link 18 and bell-crank lever 20, tilts a lever 7 clockwise to hold closed the second member 29. which is pivoted at 30. If the member 25 is pushed inwards, the lever 7 is moved counterclockwise, thereby tripping a latch 8 so as to allow a frame 4 carrying the switch unit 36 to swing to the Fig. 2 position, the member 29 having been moved by a spring 32. If the member 29 is prevented from moving by an obstruction, as would be the case in the event of a crash. the unit 36 will strike the member and will be broken or distorted so that the switch contacts close. The switch unit described is similar to that of Specification 716,504. In a modification, Fig. 7, the unit 36 is stationary and a toggle linkage 53 is connected to the lever 7 and member 29 so that if the latter opens the toggle is straightened but, if not. the toggle is bent further so that the unit 36 is fractured by a striker 54. Specification 574,947 also is referred to.
