Abstract

674,084. Thermal switches; snap-action switches. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A. June 22, 1950. [July 21, 1949] No. 19202/49. Class 38 (v). A switch which is opened on overload by thermal releases, such as those of Specification 624,581, has means which are adjustable to enable the contacts to be reset either automatically or manually. The trip-bar d of the releases a acts on a spring blade e riveted at g to a channelled member f, the other end of the blade e engaging V-notches h<SP>2</SP> in a member h so as to form a toggle, the other end of member h being pivoted to a blade spring i having an end hooked into an aperture l<SP>1</SP> in a resetting blade l. The latter is riveted at m to a fixed bracket n, and has a forked end to receive the rivet g. The upper bent-over end of member f is also hooked into aperture l<SP>1</SP>. Normally, the blade l presses the centre of the toggle to the right, Fig. 1, so that a contact o carried by spring i engages a fixed contact o<SP>1</SP>. On overload, the toggle is moved over-centre, Fig. 2, and contact o moves to the right until arrested by a stop s<SP>1</SP>, the position of which is adjustable by rotation of a plunger r having a cam which can engage the stop as claimed in Specification 674,119. In the Fig. 1 position, the cam r<SP>1</SP> is disengaged from the stop which prevents excessive movement of contact o which can thus be reset automatically by blade l. If the cam is rotated, the stop is moved to a position, Fig. 2, wherein the contact moves so far to the right that the toggle cannot return automatically, the contacts being reclosed by depression of the plunger so as to release the cam from the stop which moves to the Fig. 1 position, taking contact o with it. The plunger has a rib (not shown) co-operating with a fixed projection to prevent rotation of the plunger without initial depression thereof. A contact 6 carried by the plunger co-operates with fixed contacts n<SP>2</SP>, 7, respectively connected to contact o.and a terminal 2, so that the circuit may be broken by depression of the plunger. The stop is connected to a pilot lamp which is lit when the stop is engaged by the contact o. Specification 609,143 also is referred to.
