Abstract

A soap composition comprises soap, a non-ionic detergent, and a water-soluble, surface-active alkali metal salt of an N - substituted amino acid of the formula:-R1R2N - (CH2)xCOOM where R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 12 to 20 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, M is sodium potassium, and x is 1 or 2. The compounds are thus derivatives of glycine and b - alanine. The compounds specified comprise salts of N - methyl - N - dodecyl glycerine, the sodium salt of N - dodecyl glycerine; the sodium salt of N - coco - b - alanine prepared from coconut oil fatty acids; salts of N - tetradecyl b - alanine and salts of N - octadecyl b - alanine. The amino acid salt is used in the proportion of at least 5 per cent, preferably 10 to 15 per cent, of the weight of soap. The non-ionic detergent is preferably a water-soluble poly - (lower) alkylene oxide derivative. Types of such compounds are given and the polyethylene oxide ester of the mixture of fatty acids derived from palm kernel oil is exemplified. Proportions of at least 1 per cent, preferably 3 to 10 per cent, of the weight of soap are used. The soap compositions may be in the form of tablets, pastes, powders or liquids.
