Abstract

745,038. Aerials. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 29, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36359/53. Class 40 (7). A radio aerial system for sector scanning comprises a fixed primary element such as horn 1, fixed top and bottom plates 2, 3 and a reflector member 4 mounted about an axis 5 perpendicular to the top and bottom plates so that scanning can be effected by oscillating the reflector only about the axis 5. The reflector 4 is preferably parabolic and forms in effect the rear wall of a cheese-type system. Where the primary element is located along a line substantially bisecting the scanning sector (as in Fig. 1) the top and bottom plates are made substantially rectangular. In a modification (Fig. 2) the primary element is placed at one corner of plates shaped as right-angled triangles and the energy emerges from the hypotenuse side of the system. In this arrangement the element does not obstruct the reflected beam. The reflector 4 may be a solid plate #/4 thick at the edges or comprise parallel bars or plates spaced apart less than #/2 and running in a direction dependent on the polarization of the radio energy concerned.
