Abstract

744,630. Electric correspondence control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO.. Ltd. May 28, 1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 15006/53. Class 40(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] A follow-up servo-system wherein the error voltage is derived from the sliders of two potentiometers is characterized in that this voltage is fed through an amplifier with a feedback circuit whose resistance is automatically changed at a predetermined level of error voltage so that the amplifier has a larger gain for a low error voltage, in order to reduce the zone of no-response due to static friction. As shown (Fig.. 2) where the movement of slide 4 of potentiometer 1 is to be followed by corresponding movement of slider 5 of potentiometer 2 the error voltage Ve is amplified at 6 to energize the field winding 7 of a generator 8 which feeds a servo motor 9 to drive the slider 5 until the error signal is reduced to zero. A feedback network comprising resistors 12-15 and rectifiers 16, 17 is connected between 'the output of generator 8 and the input of the amplifier 6, the network containing a source 18 of bias current, such that when the output voltage Vg from generator 8 is high and e.g. positive, the feedback path is through low resistance 15 and rectifier 17 to give a large feedback factor and restrict the overall gain of the system, but when the output voltage Vg is small the current through rectifier 17 ceases and the feedback path passes through the larger resistance 13 and the overall gain of the system is increased.
