Abstract

1,036,234. Automatic speed control. AMPLEX CORPORATION. May 15,1964 [Sept. 6, 1963], No. 20297/64. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H3] A reversible magnetic tape transport system uses a motor driven by a dead-zone amplifier prefereably comprising a long-tailed pair of transistors 77, 78 feeding a further transistor 89 and having a pair of feedback paths via diodes 95, 97: 96, 98 provided with adjustable positive and negative bias currents via resistors 101, 102. When the input signal current via resistor 71 is less than the bias current supplied via resistors 101 or 102, diodes 95... 98 are conductive, clamping the input to the output so as to avoid spurious outputs due to noise or drift. Positive or negative input currents greater than the bias current supplied via resistors 101 or 102, cut off the respective diodes 95 and 98 or 96 and 97, thus breaking the negative feedback paths and allowing the amplifier to feed an output via the complementary pair of transistors 93, 94 to the low-inertia printed circuit motor 64. The speed is made proportional to input current by feedback via a tachogenerator (Fig. 1 not shown). The amplifier may be arranged to saturate at an input signal corresponding to half the normal control current fed via 71 so that the motor 64 has constant acceleration until its speed closely approaches normal value when the feedback from the tachogenerator (not shown) is sufficient to reduce the input signal below the saturation level.
