Abstract

744,541. Valves. W.K.M. MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. March 30, 1953, No. 8752/53. Class 135. A spherical plug valve comprises a body 1, Fig. 3, with conical seats 30 for engagement by the rotary plug C. Annular rings of contact are achieved where the seats form tangents to the plug, and a groove 32, Fig. 4, is formed in each seat 30 between the flow passage 2 and the ring of contact. A resilient seat ring 34 in the groove is pressed against the plug and towards the ring of contact by pressure in passage 2. In another arrangement either or both seats 30 is or are formed by two conical surfaces 50, 52, Fig. 5, meeting on the central axis of groove 32 to provide two rings of contact with the plug, with ring 34 between them. The body is formed of parts A and B joined together by flanges 4, 16 and held by split ring 24, pins 28 preventing relative rotation of the parts. The plug is rotatable by stem D held in the body by threads 10. In the closed condition the plug is pressed by the pressure of the fluid in the inlet against the seat remote from the inlet.
