Abstract

In high vacuum stills of the kind having a series of stationary vertically arranged distilling surfaces and corresponding stationary condensing surfaces, rotary means are provided for conveying condensate collected from one condensing surface to the distilling surface located opposite the next higher condensing surface. The still comprises an insulated tube 10 constituting the distilling surfaces, which are heated by resistance spirals 22 passing through the external wall 20 of the still, and hollow internal column 11 constituting the condensing surfaces which are cooled by circulation of water through the core formed by concentric tubes 45, 46. Openings 51 from the <PICT:0743750/III/1> central space within the column 11 afford means for evacuating the space between the columns 10, 11. Arranged at spaced intervals down the column are a number of condensate collecting gutters 38 supported on riser rods 34 passing through annular plates 32, 52 mounted on the column 10 and rotated by gearing 29, 35 keyed to motor shaft 36. Flared skirts 39 direct the condensate into gutters 38 which discharge into upwardly directed tubes 40 arranged to discharge the condensate from a lower zone to the next higher distilling zone.
