Abstract

A concentrated molybdena hydrosol containing 40-300 grams molybdena per litre and having a pH of from 0.1 to 1.4 is prepared by contacting an aqueous solution of a molybdate with an acid-washed synthetic cation-exchanging resin. Solutions of ammonium, sodium, or potassium molybdate may be employed. Air drying of the hydrosol yields a glassy, horny, amorphous mass. In examples, ammonium molybdate solution is passed downwardly through a bed of the resin to form a blue hydrosol; the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the molybdate solution maintains the molybdenum in its higher valency and provides an orange-yellow hydrosol; the solubility of ammonium molybdate may be increased by adding ammonia to the original solution. Tables are given showing the pH, specific gravity, and MoO3 content of various hydrosol fractions. The hydrosols may be used to prepare hydroforming catalysts as follows (a) by mixing the molybdena hydrosol with alumina hydrosol, with or without silica hydrosol, and oven or spray drying the product (b) by impregnating wet or dry alumina, which may contain silica, with the molybdena hydrosol. The alumina hydrosol may be formed by hydrolysis of an aluminium alcoholate; alumina of wide bore diameter is formed by hydrolizing aluminium amylate solution with a 1 per cent solution of hydrogen fluoride, filtering, pelleting, and steaming the product. Specification 645,703 is referred to.
