Abstract

743,361. Universal joints. METALASTIK, Ltd. Aug. 23, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 18783/53. Classes 80(2) and 80(3) Two or three pairs of tangential rockers 11, hinged together at adjacent ends, are hinged intermediate said ends to alternate coupled shaft members, the hinges at either or both said points being torsionally resilient, as by the provision of rubber bushes which may be radially pre-stressed. The<SP> </SP>rubber bushes are bonded to concentric metal sleeves, those of large intermediate rubber bushes 21 being press-fitted in the rockers 11 and on shaft-studs 22. As shown, using two pairs of rockers, the rocker-ends are alternately plain and forked, the plain ends 14 having rubber bushes on bolts 26 passing without clearance through the forks 15. A cruciform space is formed by the angled inner edges 13 of the rockers, and alternate edges have rubber buffers 27 which contact opposite edges under excessive torsional deflection.. In a diesel locomotive drive, Figs. 6 and 7, not shown, there are three pairs of rockers 11 with connecting end-hinges radially outwards of the intermediate hinges, but still having a right-angle between lines joining one end hinge to the adjacent intermediate hinges. Other angles may be used, particularly for obtaining a non-linear stiffness characteristic. Alternate rockers are plain and forked at both ends and have two buffers such as 27. The symmetrical position, shown, may be at zero or normal load. Damping washers may be provided at the hinges. Specifications 581,464, 622,514 and 651,134 [all in Group XXXII] are referred to.
